Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell 86%—but that is not the whole story
Indexly measured Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations falling from 3.83% to 0.52% in August 2026. The visible citation cliff is clear. What caused it—and whether ChatGPT stopped using Reddit—is not.

Read the number precisely: this is an 86.4% relative decline in Reddit's share of visible citations across two short measurement windows—not an 86% loss of Reddit's value, influence or use by ChatGPT.
What the data shows
A sharp ChatGPT break—not a universal Reddit collapse
Reddit was steady through early August, slipped when ChatGPT's query-fanout behavior changed, then fell below 1% six days later. Google's AI surfaces declined much more gradually over the same period, which points to a ChatGPT-specific event.

Citation is not the whole answer path
The tracked metric covers the last layer—not every layer
A citation report tells you which links were exposed. It does not fully reveal what the model knew beforehand, which sources it considered, or which retrieved pages influenced the synthesis.
Layer 1
Known associations
Names and concepts the model may already associate before a live search begins.
Not measured by citation share
Layer 2
Query selection
The fanout queries and domains ChatGPT decides to investigate.
Behavior changed on Aug 8
Layer 3
Retrieval & synthesis
Candidate pages can inform an answer without every one appearing below it.
Only partly observable
Layer 4
Visible citations
The subset of links surfaced to the user in the final response.
This is what fell 86.4%
The defensible conclusion is narrow: ChatGPT cited Reddit 86.4% less during the measured window. Everything beyond that needs a different experiment.
What may have changed
Retrieval behavior is the leading explanation—but not a verdict
Why source selection is plausible
On August 8, tracked use of domain-specific site: queries rose from 0.37% to 16.8%. When ChatGPT chooses a domain before it searches, fewer sites can appear incidentally in broad results.
That could favor first-party sites, documentation or selected publications over general community results. The much smaller, gradual movement on Google's AI surfaces also suggests the abrupt break was specific to ChatGPT.
Why the cause is unconfirmed
- The largest citation fall came six days after the fanout change.
- Indexly could not rule out a collection issue.
- OpenAI did not publicly confirm a Reddit-specific policy change.
What it means for marketers
Build for durable authority, not a temporary citation mechanic
AI visibility is dynamic retrieval. A platform can lose most of its citation share without your content changing at all, so the strategy has to survive model and source-selection updates.
Do not equate cited with used
A visible citation is only the final, observable layer. It does not reveal every source considered during retrieval, every association already present in the model, or every page used to shape the answer.
Retire the Reddit citation shortcut
The tactic “seed Reddit, win ChatGPT citations” is too dependent on one platform and one retrieval configuration. A source-selection change can erase that visible result without warning.
Build a distributed authority footprint
Publish clear first-party evidence, earn coverage from credible publications, participate in relevant communities, collect genuine reviews, and make original data easy to quote.
Keep doing real Reddit marketing
Reddit still matters wherever buyers compare tools, describe problems, challenge claims and form reputations. Its customer-insight value does not disappear with a citation metric.
Measure the entity, not one domain
Track whether your brand is mentioned, recommended, described accurately and associated with the right category—then inspect which sources support those outcomes across engines.
The resilient GEO portfolio
Give AI systems more than one path to your brand
No single surface is stable enough to carry an AI visibility strategy. The strongest entity appears consistently across owned, earned, community, evidence and trust layers.
Website & product docs
Canonical claims, specifications, comparisons, help content and structured evidence.
Credible publications
Independent coverage that verifies the brand and broadens its source graph.
Relevant conversations
Reddit, specialist forums and practitioner communities where the problem is discussed.
Original data
Benchmarks, research and first-party observations that others can cite directly.
Reviews & proof
Customer language, outcomes and third-party validation close to the buying decision.
Reddit still matters—just for more than citations
Reddit says LLM referral traffic is not material to its business. For marketers, the enduring value is the customer language, objections, comparisons and reputation signals created by real conversations.
A better measurement model
Move from link counting to entity-level visibility
Count citations, but treat them as one diagnostic—not the scorecard. Measure what AI says about the brand, where that answer came from and whether the visibility produces demand.
Brand visibility
Mention rate · recommendation rate · share of voice
Answer quality
Accuracy · positioning · sentiment · category association
Source footprint
Owned citations · earned citations · community citations
Business impact
AI referrals · assisted conversions · branded demand
Measure each engine separately. The contrast between ChatGPT and Google in this same dataset shows why a blended “AI visibility” number can hide the change that actually matters.
Methodology & sources
What is measured—and what remains uncertain
The headline figures come from Indexly's monitoring of real AI product interfaces. Only responses with at least one citation enter the reported citation-share calculation. Indexly says the chart identifies when the change happened, not why; it treats the magnitude as provisional because a collection issue could not be ruled out.

FAQ
Reddit's ChatGPT citation decline, answered
Did ChatGPT stop using Reddit in August 2026?
The public data does not establish that. It shows a sharp fall in Reddit's share of visible ChatGPT Search citations. That metric cannot by itself prove what ChatGPT retrieved, considered, learned previously, or used without exposing a link.
What exactly fell by 86.4%?
Reddit's average share of citations in Promptwatch's tracked ChatGPT Search responses fell from 3.83% between July 18 and August 7 to 0.52% between August 14 and 17. It was a relative decline in citation share, not an 86.4-point drop and not a measure of Reddit's total value.
Why did Reddit citations fall?
No cause has been confirmed. ChatGPT's query-fanout behavior changed on August 8, including a jump in domain-specific site: searches, which makes a retrieval or source-selection change plausible. But the major Reddit cliff arrived six days later, and Promptwatch said a collection issue could not be ruled out.
Is Reddit still useful for GEO and marketing?
Yes—when customers genuinely discuss the problem there. Reddit can influence buyer language, reputation, Google results, community discovery and potentially AI systems through several different paths. What became less reliable is using Reddit mainly as a shortcut to visible ChatGPT citations.
What should marketers track instead of Reddit citation count?
Track brand mention and recommendation rate, category association, answer accuracy, sentiment, competitor share of voice, source diversity, cited pages and business outcomes. Break those metrics out by engine because retrieval behavior differs across ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity and others.
