Per-engine attribution

Know exactly which AI engine sent each visitor

Indexly classifies every session by the AI surface that referred it — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok or Google AI Overviews — using a managed allow-list of referrers and user-agents. The lumpy 'Other' bucket in GA goes away.

  • Six engines classified independently
  • Daily share-of-AI-traffic breakdown
  • Per-session prompt + landing page when available
  • Clean fix for GA4's 'unattributed AI' problem

AI vs. organic engagement

Compare AI-referred visitors to organic SEO — and see who converts

AI-referred visitors arrive higher-intent: they've already pre-qualified the brand inside the assistant. Indexly puts AI sessions next to Google Search Console clicks so you can compare bounce, duration and conversion side by side.

  • Session duration, pages/session, bounce and conversion
  • Per-page AI vs. organic split

What customers say

Built for teams turning AI citations into pipeline

We could see citations growing but couldn't tell if anyone was actually clicking. Indexly's AI traffic view ended that ambiguity — now we know the engines that send buyers, not just impressions.

AI-referred visitors convert at 2× our organic baseline. We've moved that line item from experiment to channel in our quarterly plan, because Indexly can prove the volume.

What's inside

Designed for serious AI traffic analysis

Managed AI source allow-list

We maintain the list of AI engine referrers and user-agents — chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, grok.com, vertexaisearch and more — so attribution stays accurate as new surfaces launch.

AI vs. SEO side-by-side

Every page row shows AI sessions next to Google Search Console clicks, so you can compare volume, engagement and conversion across both channels at a glance.

AI traffic alerts

Get pinged when AI sessions spike, drop more than 20%, or when the engine mix shifts — a leading indicator of citation changes that matter before rankings do.

FAQ

Questions teams ask before turning on AI traffic attribution

Want a deeper walkthrough? Book a demo.

What is AI referral traffic?

AI referral traffic is the website traffic generated when a user clicks a cited link inside an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok or Google AI Overviews. It's the on-site outcome of AI Search Visibility: a citation only matters if a real person follows it.

How does Indexly identify traffic coming from AI engines?

Indexly classifies sessions using a combination of referrer, user-agent and known AI surface URLs (chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, grok.com, vertexaisearch and Google's AI Overview parameters). It's a managed allow-list that's updated as new AI surfaces launch — so you don't have to maintain it yourself.

Does AI referral traffic show up in Google Analytics on its own?

Partly. Some AI engines pass a referrer that GA4 buckets into 'Other' or under generic source/medium, so visits are recorded but not properly attributed to ChatGPT or Perplexity by default. Indexly resolves that ambiguity and gives you clean per-engine attribution.

Which AI engines are covered?

ChatGPT (OpenAI), Perplexity, Gemini (Google), Claude (Anthropic), Grok (xAI) and Google AI Overviews. Each is classified independently because their referrer patterns and citation behavior differ.

Can I see which page on my site each AI session landed on?

Yes. Per-URL session counts broken down by AI engine, with daily history. You see which pages AI is actually driving traffic to — and which pages get cited but never clicked.

How does AI referral traffic compare to organic SEO traffic?

Indexly shows AI sessions side-by-side with Google Search Console clicks for every page. You can compare volume, bounce rate, session duration and conversion rate between AI-referred and organic visitors — so you know which channel is producing the higher-intent buyers.

How often is the data refreshed?

Sessions ingest in near-real time; engine attribution and per-page rollups refresh daily, with the previous day finalized each morning.

Is there an API for the traffic data?

Yes. A REST API exposes per-engine, per-page and per-day session data so you can pipe it into BI tools, CRMs or attribution stacks alongside your existing pipeline metrics.
